Bloodborne
Of all the video games released last year wikth a dark atmosphere, Bloodborne is probably the darkest. The city of Yharnam is an architectural nightmare, with Gothic towers soaring into the sky and horrific creatures lurking in its gloomy alleys. The game world itself is not merely a backdrop, but a living, ever-changing part of the game: When the blood-red moon rises, things become visible that make the player question their sanity, and by the end of the story, some encounters will be interpreted quite differently than at the beginning. What is real, and what is a delusion? What is a nightmare, and what is reality? The world of Bloodborne keeps players guessing until the very end—and at the same time manages to evoke a sense of horror that fully lives up to its literary inspiration, H.P. Lovecraft.
