Anno 1800

Anno 1800 is kept up to date through three Season Passes, each of which contains three major, clearly defined and extensive game expansions. Free updates, including a co-op mode, are also part of the live service, as are cosmetic updates, the content of which is partly determined by community voting.

Particularly noteworthy is the game’s award from the United Nations’ Green Game Jam. The additional content, titled Eden Burning – which, is also free – tackles the highly topical issue of global warming and integrates the problem in a way that players can experience first-hand: to succeed, players must now consider the environmental footprint of their cities. This playful engagement with a real and pressing problem redefines the concept of a ‘live game’ in a way that no other nominated title has managed to achieve with such clarity and creativity. Furthermore, players are given the opportunity to make a direct contribution to solving the crisis through ‘Plant a Tree’, a special €3 DLC, the proceeds of which go entirely to an environmental organisation. The jury’s verdict: absolutely worthy of an award!
