Debugger 3.16: Hack'n'Run
Debugger 3.16 is a platformer in which players gradually learn methods of object-oriented programming. In addition to its atmospherically sophisticated graphics, this serious game stands out above all for its fusion of educational and gaming content: To progress in the game, players must apply the programming skills they’ve learned directly within the game to master its mechanics. This is a challenge that has previously caused many well-intentioned approaches to fail. There is no separation between the game world and the learning world. The game situation repeatedly requires the player character to acquire new skills, which can only be improved by entering source code. This is a prime example of how a serious game should be structured: Gameplay elements are skillfully blended with content that serves not merely entertainment but a specific goal—in this case, learning object-oriented programming. The educational components do not feel forced but are naturally integrated into the gameplay. Additionally, Debugger 3.16 features appealing graphics and an immersive atmosphere, ensuring that the gameplay aspects always remain front and center.
