Kingdom Come: Deliverance

Kingdom Come: Deliverance manages the feat of ignoring many seemingly essential elements of an open-world game and yet – or perhaps precisely because of this – remains astonishingly engaging. The medieval setting manages without magic, dragons, dungeons and similar elements; instead, the developers have focused on recreating 16 square kilometres of 15th-century Bohemia as realistically as possible. Instead of grandiose panoramas, we are presented with typical Central European landscapes that we could experience in much the same way today, if only we could overlook the high-voltage pylons, houses and tarmac roads. The high level of interactivity, the tasks that can sometimes seem rather unappealing in a gaming context (such as tediously waiting for trebuchets to be assembled), and the absence of fantasy elements make Kingdom Come: Deliverance an extraordinary experience.
