Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Animal Crossing is not a game that players traditionally associate with multiplayer. But during the unique circumstances of the pandemic, Nintendo’s colorful island life simulator became a vital part of an entire community—one that extended far beyond the typical gaming audience. In the game, players visit each other’s islands, share resources, recipes, and furniture, and help one another navigate the risky turnip market. The community breathed a lot of life into these simple elements: people celebrated birthday parties, hosted talk shows, and went on dates within the game. The game is accessible, promotes inclusivity, community, and creativity—and therefore represents a very special moment in multiplayer gaming culture.
