Super Meat Boy 3D
As a sequel, Super Meat Boy 3D successfully makes the leap from the previous 2D gameplay into a 3D environment, utilising the new possibilities offered by perspective for game mechanics such as wall jumps. The most important factors are the extremely fast pace and the high level of difficulty. Both aspects are characterised by excellent game design choices: the fast pace is enhanced by very fluid controls, a driving soundtrack and great variety within the levels. The high level of difficulty works because losing is seen as part of the game. Whether through the seamless reset after a mistake – allowing players to start another attempt without pause – the visual feedback from previous game-over points via red puddles, or the replay sequence as a reward for completing a level, which shows all previous failed attempts alongside the one successful run. This ultimately creates an extremely satisfying flow, in which the eventual success feels all the more rewarding because of the moments of frustration that came before.
