Marvel’s Spider-Man
Marvel’s Spider-Man is a successful blend of world-building (Manhattan) and a nod to game mechanics: the city is more than just a backdrop against which Peter Parker swings from skyscraper to skyscraper. The streets are bustling with passers-by, cars are queuing at traffic lights, Spidey is recognised, and people wave at him, wanting to take selfies with him. This sense of life and interaction makes every heroic deed twice as rewarding and allows us to feel Peter’s place and value in this setting more clearly. Despite the serious undertones, however, Spider-Man doesn’t forget the fun factor. On the contrary: swinging through the city never gets boring, even after x hours, because Manhattan constantly reveals new perspectives and lighting effects. Thanks to spider-webs, gadgets and interactive level elements, the fights also stay fresh. And the fact that Peter’s long-term girlfriend, Mary Jane Watson, has been given more than just a bit-part role and actively takes part in fighting crime further enhances the sense of realism in this superhero game world.
