Ova Magica

In the RPG life simulation game Ova Magica, we take the train to the countryside, take over a run-down farm, and then quickly hatch our first magical pet. This retreat to the countryside is clearly inspired by classic Japanese role-playing games such as Pokémon and Harvest Moon, but skilfully combines them to create a new gaming experience. It also draws on these influences visually, whilst developing its own style, which comes across as very cute, colourful and family-friendly. We were particularly surprised by the combat system; the tactics are easy to grasp but thoroughly deep, going far beyond standard turn-based battles. But the farming, exploration of the game world and the characters also work very well in Ova Magica. Despite the numerous activities, the controls remain intuitive and run smoothly. Lots of lovely details bring the world to life. The fantasy of moving here, making friends with the locals and starting a new life is already realised to a great extent here.
